Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste: A Safe, Effective, and Natural Choice for a Child’s Toothpaste | Oakland Pediatric Dentist

Pediatric Dentist Oakland

As a pediatric dentist, I’m always exploring the best and safest dental care products for my young patients. One such product that I have grown to adore is hydroxyapatite toothpaste. Widely used in Japan and Canada for decades, this toothpaste is proving to be a game-changer in dental health, and for good reasons.

Hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring mineral that makes up most of the enamel and dentin in our teeth. This means when you use hydroxyapatite toothpaste, you’re essentially applying the very substance your teeth are made of. Similar to fluoride, it is “biomimetic” and works via remineralization similar to fluoride versus xylitol which works mostly by pre-occupying bacteria from processing other carbohydrates.

While fluoride toothpaste has been a staple in dental care, hydroxyapatite presents a compelling adjunct/alternative. Studies show it’s similarly effective in remineralizing teeth and preventing cavities. The best part? It comes with no toxicity concerns. That’s a big relief, especially for parents worried about their children accidentally swallowing toothpaste. Some of my favorite brands (like carifree) combine both ingredients.

This toothpaste is not just effective; it’s incredibly safe. It can be swallowed without any worries, making it ideal for children who are still learning to brush their teeth properly. This feature offers peace of mind to parents during those early stages of dental hygiene education.

In our practice, we trust and recommend brands like Risewell and Boka. We offer samples of Risewell in our office. Feel free to ask for one during your child’s next visit!

Feel free to ask us if you have any more questions. Let’s keep those young smiles bright and healthy, naturally!
