Every child deserves dental care that puts their needs first. At Redwood Pediatric Dentistry of Oakland, we welcome families seeking a pediatric dentist near Berkeley, CA, who values prevention, thoughtful treatment decisions, and comfortable dental experiences. Led by board-certified pediatric dentist Dr. Niekia Franklin, our team provides personalized care for infants, children, and teens, from their first dental visits to more complex treatment needs.
Berkeley parents looking for pediatric dental care have several important decisions to make. Beyond finding a nearby office, you may want to understand why treatment is recommended, whether less invasive options are appropriate, and how your child will be supported during visits. At Redwood Pediatric Dentistry, we take these concerns seriously and help families understand their choices.
Dr. Franklin considers options such as silver diamine fluoride and SMART fillings for suitable cavities. These approaches may help manage decay while preserving healthy tooth structure.
Our Hello Visits introduce children to the dental office gradually, while comfort options like blankets and headphones help make appointments more manageable.
Families from Elmwood, Claremont, and Downtown Berkeley can explore routes through Ashby Avenue, Tunnel Road, and CA-13 to reach our Oakland practice.
We explain when monitoring, fluoride, or silver diamine fluoride may be suitable and when a filling or crown is the better choice for your child.
Redwood Pediatric Dentistry offers more than standard checkups and cavity fillings. Our Oakland practice provides preventive care, conservative restorative techniques, emergency evaluations, and individualized support for children with different healthcare needs. Treatment recommendations are based on clinical findings rather than a standard plan for every child.
Dental visits include evaluating tooth eruption, bite development, gum health, and individual cavity risk. We recommend digital X-rays when clinically needed and discuss protection through fluoride, sealants, and better home care. For children participating in sports, we also provide guidance on over-the-counter and custom mouthguards.
Not every cavity requires the same procedure. Depending on the tooth, we may consider silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to arrest decay, SMART fillings combining SDF with fluoride-releasing restorative material, or Hall crowns that seal selected baby molars without traditional drilling. Other cases may require fillings, pediatric crowns, or pulp treatment.
Falls, sports injuries, persistent toothaches, and dental swelling deserve careful attention. We evaluate injuries involving baby and permanent teeth, which often require different responses. A knocked-out permanent tooth needs urgent care, while a baby tooth should not be replanted. Parents can call our team for guidance before traveling from Berkeley.
Nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, can help children relax while remaining awake and responsive. For certain treatment needs, intravenous (IV) sedation may be considered. Dr. Franklin reviews the child’s health history, anxiety level, and procedure requirements before discussing which approach, if any, is appropriate.
Dental visits begin with understanding your child’s communication style, medical history, and sensory preferences. Depending on their needs, accommodations may include adjusted lighting, sunglasses, ear protection, or a slower appointment pace. We work with caregivers to develop realistic visit goals rather than expecting every child to follow the same routine.
Dr. Niekia Franklin founded Redwood Pediatric Dentistry and is a board-certified pediatric dentist with more than a decade of experience. She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Baylor College of Dentistry and completed specialty training at Indiana University, where she received a Master of Science in Dentistry. Her professional background guides individualized care.
Dr. Franklin emphasizes prevention, thoughtful treatment choices, and preserving healthy teeth whenever possible. She considers each child’s development, medical history, and comfort before recommending care, then explains the options in language parents can understand. Berkeley families visit her at Redwood’s Oakland office, where children with anxiety or additional support needs receive thoughtful, individualized dental care.

This is hands down the best pediatric dentistry in the entire Bay Area. From the moment you walk in, the reception staff is incredibly kind and welcoming. That warmth continues with the dental assistants and Dr. Franklin herself. My children are always so well cared for, but today’s visit truly stood out. When we discovered my young son had cavities, Dr. Franklin immediately sensed our worry. Before even discussing the treatment, she took the time to console my husband and me, reassuring us that this happens often and isn't a reflection of our parenting. Her empathy is unmatched. We are so grateful to have found this practice and cannot recommend them highly enough. If you want the best for your children, look no further. Dr. Franklin + Staff: I wish you all nothing but health, wealth, and success! You guys are WONDERFUL! Thank you, thank you, thank you!![]()

We love Dr. Franklin and her whole staff. My three boys are all patients at Redwood Pediatric Dentistry and I appreciate their suggestions for dental health and how they really connect with my kids. The lots of personal touches like their names on the door, my little one loves the toys and my older kids appreciate that the staff are all very friendly and fun to talk to. They also make scheduling and insurance billing very easy. Highly recommend!![]()

I started taking my now three-year-old here when she first turned one. Dr. Franklin and the team makes the experience so seamless and as fun as comforting for the kiddos, as well, a dentist trip can be :). We’re very grateful to have found this place and we’re excited that our kiddos will be here for a very long time.![]()

My family and I are so happy we came across Dr. Franklin’s office for my 6 yr old son. All the staff are so friendly and welcoming. You feel like family when you go and I love that not only is the space specifically curated for kids but all the staff have a talent for working with kids. They know exactly what to do to help the kids feel at ease. When my son had a filling, he was nervous going in but once he got on the chair Dr. Franklin explained everything to him step by step and when we was done he said it wasn’t so bad :) I also love that Dr. Franklin gives you a lot options when your child needs treatment. She is very health conscious and puts that at the forefront of her practice. I wish I had a child dentist like this when I grew up. I would always look forward to going. If you’re looking for a dentist for your child, I highly recommend Dr. Franklin!![]()

We always have a wonderful experience with the team at Redwood Pediatric Dentistry. They are so patient, kind, and great with kids. My daughter always feels comfortable, and everything is explained clearly to both of us. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a great pediatric dentist!
Redwood Pediatric Dentistry has one office in Oakland, not Berkeley. We welcome children from Berkeley neighborhoods, including Elmwood, Claremont, Downtown Berkeley, and South Berkeley. Families can schedule routine checkups, restorative treatment, emergency evaluations, and specialized pediatric care at our Oakland practice.
The route depends on where you live. From Elmwood or Claremont, Ashby Avenue and Tunnel Road connect toward CA-13, which provides access to Redwood Road. Families traveling from Downtown or West Berkeley may use different connecting roads. Check current navigation directions for accurate mileage and driving time.
Some early tooth changes can be monitored with preventive care and follow-up visits, but not every cavity is suitable for this approach. Depending on the findings, Dr. Franklin may discuss fluoride, silver diamine fluoride (SDF), or restorative treatment. SDF is a liquid that can help stop certain cavities from progressing, although treated areas permanently darken. The appropriate choice depends on your child’s dental examination.
We accept most dental insurance plans, but benefits and coverage depend on your individual policy. Our team can verify coverage before your child’s scheduled appointment and discuss expected costs. If you don’t have dental insurance, ask about our Little Smiles membership plan and other available payment options.
Start by telling our team about your child’s previous dental experiences, sensory sensitivities, or specific worries. We offer Hello Visits that allow children to explore the dental environment without the pressure of a full appointment. These visits can help your child become familiar with the office and staff before more involved dental care.
