Nitrous Oxide Sedation for Kids in Oakland, CA

Nitrous oxide sedation for kids in Oakland, CA can help some children feel more relaxed during dental treatment while remaining awake and responsive. Redwood Pediatric Dentistry evaluates each child’s needs, health history, and ability to use the nasal mask before recommending laughing gas.

What Nitrous Oxide Does During Dental Care

Nitrous oxide is an inhaled option that can help some children feel more relaxed during dental treatment. It can also provide mild pain-relieving support, but it does not necessarily replace local anesthesia when a procedure requires the treatment area to be numbed.

Your child generally remains awake and responsive while using nitrous oxide. The gas is delivered with oxygen through a small nasal mask, allowing the dental team to communicate with your child throughout the appointment. This can be helpful when a child needs to stay comfortable during complex treatment, such as a baby root canal.

Why Choose Redwood for Nitrous Oxide Sedation?

Redwood Pediatric Dentistry takes an individualized approach to laughing gas rather than assuming it is appropriate for every child. The team considers the child’s health, development, treatment needs, and ability to use the nasal mask before recommending nitrous oxide.

Pediatric Nitrous Evaluation

We consider your child’s health history, developmental needs, dental treatment, and ability to participate in nitrous oxide use.

Gentle and Comfortable Approach

The team introduces the nasal mask in an age-appropriate way so your child can understand what will happen before treatment begins.

Individualized Sedation Assessment

Factors such as nasal breathing, current health, treatment needs, and developmental considerations help determine whether nitrous oxide is appropriate. For children who may need a different type of sedation, we also offer other pediatric sedation options to support their specific needs.

Parent Education Before Treatment

We explain the purpose of nitrous oxide, possible sensations, its limitations, and other treatment approaches that may be considered.

How Laughing Gas Can Support Dental Visits

Nitrous oxide has a specific role in pediatric dental care. Understanding what it can and cannot do helps parents know what to expect.

Helps Some Children Relax

Nitrous oxide may reduce anxiety and help some children participate more comfortably during dental treatment.

Keeps the Child Responsive

Children generally remain awake and able to communicate with the dental team while using nitrous oxide.

May Provide Mild Pain-Relieving Support

Nitrous oxide may provide some analgesic effect, but local anesthesia can still be necessary when a dental procedure requires numbing.

What to Expect With Nitrous Oxide Sedation

The process begins with an evaluation to determine whether nitrous oxide is suitable for your child and the planned dental treatment.

1

Review Your Child's Health

Dr. Franklin reviews relevant medical and dental history, current health, developmental considerations, and treatment needs.

2

Introduce the Nasal Mask

Your child breathes the nitrous oxide and oxygen mixture through a small nasal mask. The team explains the process so your child knows what to expect.

3

Administer Nitrous Oxide and Monitor Your Child

Nitrous oxide is administered according to your child’s needs and the planned treatment. The dental team observes your child’s response throughout the appointment.

4

Complete Recovery

After nitrous oxide administration ends, the dental team continues to observe your child as they return toward their usual level of responsiveness and provides appropriate instructions before leaving the office.

This is hands down the best pediatric dentistry in the entire Bay Area. From the moment you walk in, the reception staff is incredibly kind and welcoming. That warmth continues with the dental assistants and Dr. Franklin herself. My children are always so well cared for, but today’s visit truly stood out. When we discovered my young son had cavities, Dr. Franklin immediately sensed our worry. Before even discussing the treatment, she took the time to console my husband and me, reassuring us that this happens often and isn't a reflection of our parenting. Her empathy is unmatched. We are so grateful to have found this practice and cannot recommend them highly enough. If you want the best for your children, look no further. Dr. Franklin + Staff: I wish you all nothing but health, wealth, and success! You guys are WONDERFUL! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

We love Dr. Franklin and her whole staff. My three boys are all patients at Redwood Pediatric Dentistry and I appreciate their suggestions for dental health and how they really connect with my kids. The lots of personal touches like their names on the door, my little one loves the toys and my older kids appreciate that the staff are all very friendly and fun to talk to. They also make scheduling and insurance billing very easy. Highly recommend!

I started taking my now three-year-old here when she first turned one. Dr. Franklin and the team makes the experience so seamless and as fun as comforting for the kiddos, as well, a dentist trip can be :). We’re very grateful to have found this place and we’re excited that our kiddos will be here for a very long time.

My family and I are so happy we came across Dr. Franklin’s office for my 6 yr old son. All the staff are so friendly and welcoming. You feel like family when you go and I love that not only is the space specifically curated for kids but all the staff have a talent for working with kids. They know exactly what to do to help the kids feel at ease. When my son had a filling, he was nervous going in but once he got on the chair Dr. Franklin explained everything to him step by step and when we was done he said it wasn’t so bad :) I also love that Dr. Franklin gives you a lot options when your child needs treatment. She is very health conscious and puts that at the forefront of her practice. I wish I had a child dentist like this when I grew up. I would always look forward to going. If you’re looking for a dentist for your child, I highly recommend Dr. Franklin!
