IV Sedation for Kids in Oakland, CA

IV sedation for kids in Oakland, CA, may be considered when a child needs more involved dental treatment and requires additional support to complete care comfortably. Redwood Pediatric Dentistry evaluates each child’s dental needs, medical history, treatment complexity, and ability to participate before recommending an IV sedation approach.

When IV Sedation May Be Considered

Iv sedation is not needed for every child or dental procedure. Dr. Franklin evaluates your child’s dental situation, planned treatment, and ability to participate before determining the right approach. For children who may need a different level of support, our pediatric sedation includes other approaches based on their individual needs.

Some children may benefit from IV sedation when dental anxiety, difficulty cooperating, or other challenges make routine treatment more difficult. Children with certain medical, developmental, or behavioral considerations may also require additional planning to determine the most suitable approach for their care.

Why Choose Redwood for IV Sedation?

IV sedation requires careful planning before treatment begins. Redwood Pediatric Dentistry focuses on evaluating each child’s situation and helping families understand the process from preparation through recovery .

Pediatric Sedation Evaluation

Before recommending IV sedation, the team considers the planned dental procedures, medical history, anxiety level, and ability to participate during treatment.

Coordination With Qualified Anesthesia Provider

IV sedation is administered by a qualified anesthesia provider who manages the sedation process while the dental team focuses on completing the planned dental care.

Treatment Planning for Complex Care

Dental treatment does not always happen under ideal circumstances. If your child needs urgent care after an injury or sudden dental problem, our emergency dentistry team can first evaluate the situation and determine what treatment is needed.

Parent Preparation and Guidance

Parents receive information about preparation, what to expect during treatment, recovery instructions, and questions they may want to discuss before the appointment.

How IV Sedation Supports Dental Treatment

IV sedation has a specific role in pediatric dental care. It may help children receive necessary treatment when routine approaches may not be suitable for their situation.

Helps Complete More Involved Treatment

IV sedation may help children receive necessary dental care when longer or more involved treatment makes a standard appointment challenging. This can be especially helpful for long procedures such as a baby root canal when a child has difficulty staying comfortable.

Provides a Deeper Sedation Level

Unlike nitrous oxide, which is inhaled through a nasal mask, IV sedation uses medication delivered through a vein to provide a deeper level of sedation.

Supports Child-Specific Treatment Planning

The sedation approach is selected based on the child’s specific situation, planned procedures, medical considerations, and clinical evaluation.

What to Expect With IV Sedation

Every child’s experience is planned around their dental treatment and individual circumstances. The process includes preparation, sedation administration, monitoring, and recovery.

1

Review Your Child’s Health and Dental Needs

Before treatment, the dental and anesthesia teams review relevant medical history, dental concerns, planned procedures, and other factors that may affect sedation.

2

Prepare for Sedation

Parents receive instructions before the appointment to help prepare their child. This may include guidance about arrival time, medications, eating or drinking instructions, and what to expect on the day of treatment.

3

Receive IV Sedation During Treatment

During the appointment, IV sedation medication is administered by the qualified anesthesia provider. Your child is monitored while the dental team completes the planned treatment.

4

Recover and Follow Discharge Instructions

After treatment, your child is observed during recovery. The team provides instructions for home care and explains what parents should expect after the appointment.

This is hands down the best pediatric dentistry in the entire Bay Area. From the moment you walk in, the reception staff is incredibly kind and welcoming. That warmth continues with the dental assistants and Dr. Franklin herself. My children are always so well cared for, but today’s visit truly stood out. When we discovered my young son had cavities, Dr. Franklin immediately sensed our worry. Before even discussing the treatment, she took the time to console my husband and me, reassuring us that this happens often and isn't a reflection of our parenting. Her empathy is unmatched. We are so grateful to have found this practice and cannot recommend them highly enough. If you want the best for your children, look no further. Dr. Franklin + Staff: I wish you all nothing but health, wealth, and success! You guys are WONDERFUL! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

We love Dr. Franklin and her whole staff. My three boys are all patients at Redwood Pediatric Dentistry and I appreciate their suggestions for dental health and how they really connect with my kids. The lots of personal touches like their names on the door, my little one loves the toys and my older kids appreciate that the staff are all very friendly and fun to talk to. They also make scheduling and insurance billing very easy. Highly recommend!

I started taking my now three-year-old here when she first turned one. Dr. Franklin and the team makes the experience so seamless and as fun as comforting for the kiddos, as well, a dentist trip can be :). We’re very grateful to have found this place and we’re excited that our kiddos will be here for a very long time.

My family and I are so happy we came across Dr. Franklin’s office for my 6 yr old son. All the staff are so friendly and welcoming. You feel like family when you go and I love that not only is the space specifically curated for kids but all the staff have a talent for working with kids. They know exactly what to do to help the kids feel at ease. When my son had a filling, he was nervous going in but once he got on the chair Dr. Franklin explained everything to him step by step and when we was done he said it wasn’t so bad :) I also love that Dr. Franklin gives you a lot options when your child needs treatment. She is very health conscious and puts that at the forefront of her practice. I wish I had a child dentist like this when I grew up. I would always look forward to going. If you’re looking for a dentist for your child, I highly recommend Dr. Franklin!

Frequently Asked Questions About IV Sedation for Kids

Will my child be awake during IV sedation?

IV sedation provides a deeper level of sedation than nitrous oxide. The level of responsiveness depends on the sedation approach used and should be discussed with the anesthesia provider before treatment.

IV sedation may be considered for children who need more involved dental procedures, have significant dental anxiety, have difficulty cooperating during treatment, or require additional planning due to their individual circumstances.

No. Nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, is inhaled through a nasal mask and generally allows children to remain awake and responsive. IV sedation involves medication delivered through a vein and provides a deeper level of sedation.

IV sedation and general anesthesia are different approaches. IV sedation uses medication delivered through a vein to provide a deeper level of sedation, while general anesthesia involves a deeper state of unconsciousness. The recommended approach depends on your child’s treatment requirements and clinical evaluation.

Your child is monitored throughout the procedure by the anesthesia team. Monitoring continues during recovery until your child meets the appropriate recovery criteria.
