At Redwood Pediatric Dentistry, we’re always looking for ways to make children’s dental care more comfortable, precise, and positive. That’s why we use the LightScalpel CO₂ laser for select soft-tissue dental procedures.
Laser dentistry allows us to care for delicate areas of the mouth with accuracy and gentleness, often with less bleeding, less swelling, and a smoother experience for children and families.
Laser Technology
The LightScalpel CO₂ laser uses a highly focused beam of light to precisely treat soft tissue. Instead of cutting tissue with a traditional scalpel or scissors, the laser gently vaporizes targeted tissue while sealing small blood vessels at the same time. LightScalpel describes its CO₂ laser as especially useful for pediatric soft-tissue procedures because of its precision, fast tissue interaction, and ability to provide instant hemostasis, or bleeding control.
For children, this can mean a calmer procedure and a more comfortable healing experience.

The LightScalpel CO₂ laser is commonly used in pediatric dentistry for procedures such as frenectomies, gingivectomies, soft-tissue adjustments, and exposure of impacted teeth when appropriate.

Common Uses
One of the most common pediatric uses for the LightScalpel CO₂ laser is a frenectomy, which releases restricted tissue under the tongue or upper lip.
A tongue-tie or lip-tie may affect feeding, speech, oral hygiene, spacing, comfort, or function, depending on the child and severity. If we believe your child may benefit from evaluation or treatment, we’ll talk through findings carefully and collaborate with other providers when helpful, such as lactation consultants, speech therapists, pediatricians, or myofunctional therapists.
